Empowering Women’s Savings Groups in Mtaya with Digital Safety Skills

We held a seesion in Mtaya community, where we engaged women’s savings groups involved in village banking (chilimba) to strengthen their capacity in digital safety and grassroots accountability.

During this interactive session, we trained over 29 members on practical digital safety tips, focusing on how to keep their money and personal information secure online. In today’s growing digital economy, where mobile money and online transactions are part of everyday life, it is crucial that women especially those managing savings groups understand how to detect and avoid online scams, protect their passwords, and verify digital financial platforms.

To promote social accountability and transparency, we also introduced simple yet effective tools such as declarations of interest, attendance registers, and membership forms. These tools help groups strengthen internal governance, enhance trust, and prevent exploitation within village banking systems.

A key highlight of the session was the selection of two Digital Champions from among the participants. These women will serve as local focal points, helping their peers continue learning, sharing information, and adopting safer digital practices.

This initiative is part of Lizu Community Network’s broader effort to bridge the digital divide and empower grassroots communities with essential digital literacy and accountability tools. By equipping women with these skills, we are not only promoting safer financial practices but also enhancing women’s participation in local governance and community development.
